Blue Devil boys swamp Bulldogs

Senior Gary Winston surpasses 1,000 career points in Friday's season-opening 73-29 win

WALLA WALLA — Wa-Hi connected on 27-of-53 shots from the floor, and its tenacious defense stymied Pasco’s offensive efforts, especially in the first half.

Before the intermission Wa-Hi’s Colton Arias and Gary Winston poured a combined 24 points through the hoops, 12 each, and the Blue Devils limited the Bulldogs to 14 points, including three in the first quarter.

Wa-Hi led 43-14 at the break.

The Blue Devils remained defensively intense in the second half and finished with a 73-29 non-league boys prep basketball victory over Pasco to open the 2009-10 season.

Winston, who entered the game with 996 career points, broke the 1,000-point plateau with a game-high 18 points, including a first-quarter dunk on a fast break that brought the Blue Devil student section to its feet.

"That’s a pretty good milestone for a high school player," Wa-Hi coach John Golden said. "I think the last one we had do that was (Kyle) Bankhead."

Bankhead, who played on Wa-Hi’s 1999 Class 4A state championship team, finished wit 1,184 points.

"Colton had a good night," Golden said of Arias. "He’s picking up from where he left off last year. A lot of our kids are. It was exciting to see.

Michael (Weisner) didn’t shoot it as well as he can, but he still did a lot of good things. Gary was pretty steady.

"Jake Aguiar kind of set the tone for us on defense early in the game," Golden said. "We had a lot of good contributions. I thought all of the guys off the bench played well."

Arias, who hit six-of-seven shots from the floor, finished with 15 points.

Weisner led Wa-Hi rebounders with 11 and chipped in nine points and four assists.

"I thought it was a great way to come out," Weisner said. "We really got after it defensively. We were hustling around real well. Unfortunately, the offense isn’t quite there yet, but offense comes with time. That will improve throughout the season, but overall it was a great effort defensively.

"Defense and rebounding are going to be the main thing for us," Weisner said. "We need to focus on small things like getting on the floor and playing good defense."

Jordan Le Mieux paced the Bulldogs with 15 points and 14 boards. Pasco finished the game with an 11-for-54 shooting performance from the floor.

Wa-Hi hit seven-of-13 shots in the first quarter and raced to a 21-3 lead by limiting Pasco to 1-for-10 shooting.

Wa-Hi led 44-14 at halfimte and 63-23 after three quarters.

"I saw a lot of good things," Golden said. "Our intensity, our leadership, our ability to get after it defensively was the key.

"We shot pretty well," he said. "We did a lot of things that we wanted to get accomplished. We got a lot of guys in to get their feet wet. So, that was a positive.

"Pasco is going to struggle a little bit," Golden continued. "They’ve been decimated by the split (that formed Chiawana, Pasco’s second public high school which opened in the fall). But their kids played hard the whole game.

"I was proud of our kids that came out even in the second half and continued to stretch it," Golden said. "We worked on some things, including the zone a little bit. It was a good night as far as that goes.

"That’s what it’s going to take," Golden added. "These guys know that, and they’re working hard."
