WALLA WALLA — An unidentified woman was killed in a head-on collision with a logging truck this morning along Highway 12 at Airport Road, authorities said.
The crash occurred about 4 a.m. when a log truck heading west on the highway attempted to avoid a wrong-way driver traveling east in the westbound lanes, said Washington State Patrol Sgt. Michael Eggleston.
Highway 12 was shut down until about 9 a.m. while crews worked the scene, including clearing the semi from the road and containing a diesel fuel spill, Eggleston said. The state’s Department of Ecology was on scene in response to the spill, as well as crews with Walla Walla Fire District 4.
The force of the crash killed the woman on impact and caused a fire, according to reports. The Walla Walla County Coroner’s Office said they are working to positively identify the woman through dental records.
