Coyotes catch Granger, take 24-13 victory to open season

The Coyotes score three second-half TDs to overcome a 13-3 halftime deficit in Friday’s opener.

GRANGER — After trailing throughout the first half, Burbank found the end zone three times after the intermission and came away with a 24-13 comeback victory over Granger here Friday night to kick off the 2009 prep football season.


Trailing 13-3 at the break, the Coyotes rallied behind a 26-yard Dillon Rice touchdown pass to Neal Schuck and a pair of short Forest Gordon touchdown runs. The Rice-to-Schuck catch-and-throw pulled Burbank within 13-10 early in the third quarter, Gordon’s 1-yard scoring burst later in the period gave Burbank the lead and his 2-yard plunge in the fourth quarter assured the victory.


Chase Carpenter scored both of Granger’s touchdowns on runs of 5 yards in the first quarter and 16 yards in the second. Ivan Barajas booted a 25-yard field goal for the Coyotes’ only points of the first half, and he was successful on all three of his conversion kicks after the intermission.


Gordon finished with 127 yards rushing on 24 carries to key Burbank’s running game, and Rice completed 6-of-19 passes for 162 yards, although he was intercepted twice.


Francisco Morales gained 59 yards on 16 carries and Carpenter added 54 on 15 tried for Granger. Morales was 4-for-14 passing for 66 yards.


Burbank is on the road again next Friday when the Coyotes travel to Zillah for non-league play.
