WALLA WALLA – Jesse Wright watched as his brother, Cody, set the standard in saddle bronc riding here in action at the Saturday night performance of the Frontier Days Rodeo.
Cody rode a horse called Dusty to a Saturday night best score of 78 to move into second place in saddle bronc riding as the ride came up one point short of Ty Atchison’s Friday ride of 79.
Jesse Wright came out of the chute on Smooth Sailin and sailed home with an 80 to edge past his brother for the best Saturday go ride and take the rodeo lead in saddle bronc riding.
"It was a pretty good trip," Jesse Wright said of his ride. "I hadn’t even heard of the horse, but tonight he was alright. He didn’t surprise me too much."
The ride will keep Jesse Wright in the lead for saddle bronc rookie of the year.
"This is a pretty good (win)," Wright said. "I’m trying to get to Vegas (Wright is currently 17th with the top 15 qualifying for the National Finals). I’ve got to start winning to get there."
The team roping duo of Matt Sherwood and Rhen Richard caught the horns and heels of their steer in 4.2 seconds to post the best run of the Saturday go.
The run moved Sherwood and Richard to the lead in the second go and moved them into second place in the average with a 9.7 on two. JoJo LeMond and Randon Adams lead the average with a 8.9 on two head.
A Hermiston cowboy opened the Saturday show with an 81 bareback ride. Zac Compton posted an 83 on Friday at Ellensburg and his 81 Saturday moved him to a tie for the rodeo lead here. Jessy Davis scored 81 in Friday action.
"This horse (Rain Dance) was really nice," Compton said. "I got a little opened up, and kind of got loose, and she kind of started beating me down, but she felt really good. I was glad I was able to get on her."
The steer wrestling gained the loudest fan reaction of the night. Walla Walla Community College rodeo coach, Buster Barton, came out and for a brief moment the clock showed that Barton threw his steer in 3.3 seconds, and the hometown crowd reacted appropriately. However, there is the matter of the barrier, and Barton beat the barrier and the time went from 3.3 to 13.3.
Six-foot-7, 265-pound Jake Rinehart had the fastest non-barrier busting steer wrestling run as the South Dakota cowboy got his job done in 4.4. It was well short of Ronnie Fields’ 3.5 that leads the second go. Trevor Knowles leads the rodeo with 7.4 on two head.
The No. 4 PRCA ranked tie-down roper posted the quickest Saturday run. Tuf Cooper got his calf caught and tied in 8.5, which moved him to fifth in the second go, and second in the rodeo at 18.0 on two. Timber Moore’s 17.9 leads the average and Seth Childers and Monty Lewis share the lead with 8.0 runs.
Tammy Key-Fischer turned a 17.12 run in barrel racing during Friday action, and no cowgirl came close on Saturday.
Two-time world champion Sherry Cervi turned the best run on Saturday with a 17.36.
Only three bull riders came out of the chutes on Saturday. None of them made it to the eight-second whistle.
So far, there has only been one successful bull ride. Wesley Silcox scored 85 on Friday and leads.
Rodeo action concludes tonight at 7 p.m. at the fairgrounds.
