THE DALLES, Ore. — Mac-Hi’s girls soccer team played its first official game here Tuesday and came out on the short end of a 2-1 score against The Dalles-Wahtonka.
"It’s a real good Class 5A team with 12 seniors," Mac-Hi coach Martin Martinez said of The Dalles-Wahtonka. "I’m real proud of my team the way they played against a very good team."
Goals by Marie Miller, on a penalty kick, and by Nikki McCall, unassisted, gave the home team a 2-0 lead midway in the second half after a scoreless first half in which each team executed 10 shots. By games end, however, The Dalles-Wahtonka held a 23-12 edge in shots.
Belen Betancourt earned Mac-Hi’s only goal at the 77-minute mark, unassisted.
"We had plenty of time to come back, but we couldn’t get off enough shots," Martinez said.
Kayln Odman was in goal for the Pioneers and deflected seven shots.
The Pioneers are back in action Thursday when they entertain Hermiston at 5:30 p.m.
