LEWISTON, Idaho - Junior runner Emily Childers had a pair of first-place finishes in the 100 and 200 meters, with 12.74 seconds and 26.90 seconds respectively, to lead the Mac-Hi Pioneers girls track team to a fifth place finish in a pool of 11 teams at the Lewiston Twilight Invitational here Friday.
"Childers had a fantastic day against tough competition in Lewiston," Mac-Hi coach John Milleson said. "She ran hard from start to finish in each of her races and had a great day." Childers also finished second in the 400 meters for the girls team of just 12 competitors, two who were sick.
"I was real pleased to do that well with only 12 girls competing," Milleson said.
The Mac-Hi boys, behind a strong performance in the shot put from seniors Zach Conlee (first, 45 feet, 04.00 inches) and Chris Brown (fourth, 41-1.50), finished eighth out of eleven teams.
The boys had 38 competitors and several others placed.
Tony Ng had a pair of seventh place finishes, in the 300 meter hurdles (46.83) and long jump (17-10.50).
"Tony, a transfer student, has been a good find," Milleson said. "He has been improving his technique, getting faster and stronger."
Kendall Brown finished third in the 400 (52.72), Lucas Simpson sixth in 300 hurdles (46.20), and Rick Sandoval sixth in triple jump (38-03.00).
"I was happy with the boys' eighth place performance," Milleson said. "We are gaining experience in our third meet of the season and gaining confidence to do better in the future."
Besides Childers, the Pioneer girls had other standout performances.
Junior Kathleen Hopkins had two fifth place finishes in the 300 hurdles (51.63) and 400 (1:04.32).
"Kathleen had a good performance," Milleson said. "She figures to be a great performer for us this year."
Sierra Burchell took sixth in the triple jump (28-10.50) and eighth in the long jump (13-03.25).
Mica Epifanio had a third place finish in the long jump (14-09.00).
The best team event for Mac-Hi was the girls' fourth place finish in the 400 sprint medley (2:21.49). The team included Alejandra Ibarra, Carol Trevino, Yanelly Aviles and Jennifer Ponce.
"We've been working on conditioning the last month and a half," Milleson said. "We should be getting a little sharper in our events. We will be concentrating more on them and get better from here on out."
Mac-Hi meets at 4:30 p.m. Thursday in the Union Invite and 2 p.m. Friday in the La Grande Invite.
