WALLA WALLA - A 16-0 second-quarter run by University Prep over DeSales in boys basketball action led the Pumas to a 55-29 win over the Irish.

The semifinal D.A. Davidson Christmas Classic loss drops DeSales to 3-4 in season play. The Irish play Echo in the third-place game at 4:30 p.m. today at Whitman College's Sherwood Center.

"It doesn't matter who you are playing," said DeSales coach Allyn Griffin. "A 16-0 run at any point in any game really hurts. Then you have to spend so much energy just coming back and we never did recover.

"Give them (Pumas) credit, they placed an extreme amount of pressure on the ball and played good defense all game long."

University Prep grabbed a 3-0 lead before DeSales rallied for a 5-3 lead early in the first, but the Irish wouldn't lead again.

Spencer Cordeiro scored a 2 on the inside and Tommy Gregg drove to the hoop for the shot and one opportunity for 3 points for the short-lived lead.

Gregg led DeSales with nine points in the game.

By the end of the first quarter, it was 13-7 Pumas.

The Irish only scored score two points in the second quarter, on a finger roll through the middle of the lane by Lucas Fazzari late in the stanza. Fazzari's hoop came after a whirlwind of 14 Irish turnovers and 29 points for the Pumas.

DeSales went into the half down 29-9 and with 14 turnovers.

DeSales showed more energy in the second half, putting 20 points on the scoreboard.

"They played really good man-to-man defense, especially in the first half," Griffin said of University Prep. "We switched things up in our offensive sets the second half and got better spacing to allow more open looks and penetration by our guards.

"We were able to make more things happen this way after our halftime talk."

DeSales had just four second-half turnovers.

The Pumas, a Class 1A team from Seattle, outrebounded DeSales 24-19.

The Irish hustled down 14 steals in the game, led by Wales' five.

"On the average, their guys had about four inches on each of our guys and they were athletic, too," Griffin said. "We haven't faced that type of size and defensive pressure before. We'll learn and adjust to the tougher defenses, but we weren't able to do so tonight. I was really proud of the effort our guys put out in the second half this evening."
