Curtis Philip Hoffman

Curtis Philip Hoffman, 90, passed away Jan. 29, 2010, at his home in Prescott. He was raised, lived and died on the family farm that washomesteaded in 1889.

Curtis was born Oct. 4, 1919, in Walla Walla, to Phillip and Evelyn Gregory Hoffman.He attended a schoolhouse in Eureka and graduated from WallaWalla High School in 1937.On April 12, 1941, he married Carole Coleman inHollywood, Calif.

From 1942 to 1946, he was in the U.S. Army in the 388th Service Squadron58th Service Group as a mechanic for automotive and aircraft.He obtained hisprivate pilot license in 1948.Curtis was affiliated with the Prescott Presbyterian Church, an avid hunter and gun collector and enjoyed reloadinghis own ammunition.He was also a hunter safety instructor.

He loved cowboy music and played the guitar, mandolin and fiddle and played at some local barn dances.He was a skilled leather worker and built andrepaired leather items.He also loved to horse pack into the mountain forextended periods and read western novels.He was a farmer and cattleman andhis lifetime passion was his cows and horses.

He was a member of the National Rifle Association, Waitsburg Gun Club inthe early years, charter member of the local volunteer fire department (Walla Walla County Fire Dist. #3), Prescott Lions Club, the local Grange, Washington Cattlemen’s Association in which he was Cattleman of the Year in1979, Walla Walla Grain Growers Association, Washington Wheat Growers andWalla Walla Wagon Wheelers.

Curtis is survived by his wife of 68 years, Carol Hoffmann of Prescott;a son and daughter-in-law, Steven C. and Cynthia Hoffman, Prescott; a sister, Phyllis Mann, Walla Walla; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Allen and Dorothy Hoffman, Walla Walla, and John and Sharon Hoffmann, Milton Freewater; grandchildren, Aaron S. Hoffmann,Prescott, Sarah Winoana and her husband Jake, Prescott, Jim Cranston and his wife Holly, La Grande; four great-grandchildren, Cody Hoffmann, TylerHoffmann, Will Winona and Curtis Winona; one niece, Sally Mann; five nephews,Philip Hoffman, Greg Hoffman, John Hoffmann, Randy Hoffmann and Brian Hoffman. He is preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, Christine A. "Tina"Hoffmann.

Viewing and visitation will be held Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2010, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. atHerring Groseclose Funeral Home, 315 W. Alder, WallaWalla. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, Feb. 4, 2010, at 1 p.m. at the Community Church of Prescott with the Rev. Mike Wallaceofficiating.Interment will follow at Ivy Cemetery in Prescott.Memorialcontributions may be made to Prescott Community Church or Walla Walla Community Hospice through the funeral home.
