Hot Mama's Espresso to raise money students at Liberty Christian School


A cup of brew at Hot Mama's Espresso could raise some dough for students at Liberty Christian School.

Every Tuesday in March the Pine Street coffee business will donate $1 for each drink sold to the school's upcoming class trip.

Every other year, the school's seventh- and eighth-graders take a class trip. This year, it's a three-day visit to Seattle. The donation from Hot Mama's will help make that possible.

In addition to the Tuesday offering, Hot Mama's owner Cathy Rasley said the business has added white coffee to its menu. She said the white coffee comes from a bean that's been lightly roasted, offers more caffeine in a shot and has a nutty, sweeter taste. The business's $2 special Fridays now features the "First Responder," a 16-ounce white coffee made with white chocolate and coconut. "It tastes just like a macaroon cookie," Rasley said. Volunteers are sought to help launch the 36th annual Walla Walla Balloon Stampede this May.

The Walla Walla Valley Chamber of Commerce is on the lookout for volunteers to help with the three-day hot air balloon festival.

Volunteers are needed for an array of jobs, including everything from planning the Stampede to working throughout the event, according to an announcement in the Chamber's Valley Business News.

This year's event runs May 7, 8 and 9. Volunteer meetings take place the first and third Tuesday of the month, except next month when the meetings run March 3, 17 and 31, according to the announcement. The hour-long meetings begin at 5:15 p.m. at the Chamber office, 29 E. Sumach St. To volunteer, call Susan Hall at 525-0850 or visit the Chamber office.


Walla Walla's Substance wine brand made Wine Business Monthly's seventh annual list of "Hot Small Brands."

Substance, a joint venture between Waters Winery and Gramercy Cellars, was recognized as an up-and-comer by the magazine, which highlights 10 brands from small- and medium-sized producers.

"We gravitate toward wineries and brands that represent market trends or innovation, that take a leadership position in their regions, or that make unusual varietals or unexpected wines," wrote Cyril Penn in the February edition of Wine Business Monthly.

The award is the latest for Substance, recognized for its innovation and design in the past with a "Coolest wine label" recognition from Seattle Magazine and the American Graphic Design Award in Graphic Design USA Magazine for its Periodic Table of Washington Wines Web site.
