DAYTON — Paced by two early free throws and a trey by Colton Bickelhaupt, Dayton jumped out to an early 5-2 lead in the first 1:30 of its Southeast B South Division matchup against Walla Walla Valley Academy. But the Knights quickly erased that lead and any doubt about the outcome of the game with a 14-0 run over the next five minutes, and WWVA went on to beat Dayton 80-48 here Tuesday.

"Our kids may have been a step faster tonight," WWVA coach Les Balk said. "And I think the faster pace took Dayton out of the things that they’re effective in. Get the ball in the low block, in the half-court, which is not good for us. By keeping it up-tempo, it was to our advantage."

That faster pace built WWVA a 19-point halftime lead and 32-point final margin of victory.

"We knew they were going to get up and down the court," Dayton assistant coach Clayton Strong said. "We’ll take our chances in transition when we can get them, but we can’t play at that frenetic of a pace — full up and down — for 32-minutes.

"We like to control tempo whenever possible, get into our half-court sets, and try to pound the ball inside to our bigs, but we didn’t do any of that tonight."

Brad Luce’s 14 points led a balanced WWVA scoring attack that placed five Knights in double figures. Caleb Sauerbier and Matt Moore contributed 13 points apiece, and Michael Hanson added 12 points and led all rebounders with nine.

"We try to spread the ball around. I don’t care about (the individual) score as long as the team is scoring. And the kids have bought into it. They share the ball. They’re assisting, they’re passing, they’re looking for their teammates," Balk said.

Garrett Turner led Dayton with 11 points. Colton Bickelhaupt added another 10, before leaving the game with five fouls.
