YAKIMA — Led by Michael Weisner’s 16 boards, Wa-Hi outrebounded Eisenhower 42-27.

The Blue Devils outdefended the Cadets in the first half, allowing 4-for-30 shooting from the floor and leading 22-14 at the intermission.

Wa-Hi, led by Weisner’s 20 points, outshot Ike to win the second half, 42-41.

The all-around effort gave the Blue Devils a 64-55 Big Nine Conference Cascade Division victory at the Cadets’ gym here on Wednesday.

The win gives the Blue Devils a 3-1 record in the division and an 8-2 record overall.

Weisner finished with a double-double, 26 points and 16 rebounds for the Blue Devils.

Gary Winston and Ryan James chipped in 13 points apiece for Wa-Hi.

James Lopez and Robert Bonzer scored 16 points each for Ike.

Wa-Hi limited Ike to 13-percent shooting from the floor for the first half.

Yet, the Blue Devils connected on just 30 percent from the floor in that 16 minutes (8-for-26).

Winston, Wa-Hi’s leading scorer on the year with a 25.7 points-per-game average, finished the first half with four points.

Weisner had six in the first half.

"They came out in a triangle-and-2 on Gary and Michael, and we just had to make adjustments," Golden said. "I told these guys we would have to make the adjustments kind of on the fly, as we go, and they did a great job."

James filled the scoring void in the first half with nine points, including 2-for-2 on 3-point tries.

"Our strategy at first was mostly to get the ball into the middle," James said. "We knew that was going to be open like it has been the last few times that we’ve been here, because they’ve stayed in the zone for the whole game.

"But they moved into the triangle-and-2 to guard Gary and Mike, so other people had to step up and get the ball," he said.

Wa-Hi led 22-14 at the intermission and eked out a 23-22 edge in the three period.

Weisner hit a pair of 3s in the period, and Winston canned a 3 with two seconds on the clock to give the Blue Devils a nine-point lead, 45-36.

Ike cut the lead to 45-40 in the first two minutes of the fourth quarter, but over the next two minutes James pilfered an Ike pass and force a turnover.

The steal led to a Weisner 3-pointer, and the turnover led to a Weisner three-point play that gave Wa-Hi a nine-point lead again, 51-42 .

"Playing defense was definitely a big factor," James said. "We threw them way off their game in the first half, and they couldn’t make the shots.

"It was good defense on our part," he continued. "Holding them to one field goal and six points in the second quarter really gave us the advantage. That was just hard-nosed defense."

Ike closed the game to seven points, 62-55, with 35 seconds to play.

Wa-Hi’s Colton Arias capped the scoring and the victory with a layin.

"The one thing that was constant was our defense," Golden said. "Especially that first half, we really defended.

"Now the challenge moves against Richland on Friday at our place," he said. "It’s going to be a good one. They’re on a roll. They’ll be gunning for us, and our defense has stepped up."

Richland comes into the Wa-Hi gym for the 7:30 p.m. game at 10-0 and ranked fourth in the weekly AP Class 4A state poll.

Wa-Hi enters the game ranked seventh, and Kamiakin, 9-1, is ranked sixth.
