Thul's buzzer-beater downs Pilot Rock

PILOT ROCK — Pilot Rock grabbed a two-point lead at 54-52 with 3.2 seconds left here Saturday in boys Blue Mountain Conference basketball action.

Weston-McEwen took a time out, but had to go the length of the court in those few ticks to get a win and remain in no worse than a tie for the top spot in the BMC standings.

"We told him to go as far as he could," TigerScot coach Brian Pickard said of his last instructions. "He only had time for three or four dribbles."

W-M inbounded to Miles Thul, who took those three or four dribbles and launched a runner from half court.

The ball found the bottom of the net and the TigerScots had a dramatic 55-54 win.

"We were picked to finish seventh," Pickard said. "We have to earn respect, but we are proving that when we show up to play, we can play with anyone."

The Rockets opened the game on a hot streak and jumped to a 10-point lead. The TigerScots got it figured out and roared back to cut the lead to 16-14 after the first quarter.

"After that 10-point lead, it was back and forth the whole way," Pickard said. "We got it tied on a Jacob Christopher free throw with 18 seconds left. Then we fouled and they hit both."

Thul finished with 12 points and Dallas Reich led the TigerScots with 17 points.

B’marcus Bowie led all scorers with 18 for the Rockets.

Reich, Owen Hegdal and Corban Hegdal each pulled down seven rebounds as the smaller TigerScots managed to battle the Rockets to a near standstill on the boards. Pilot Rock grabbed 40 rebounds, but the TigerScots got 37.

"They have big kids," Pickard said. "We stressed rebounding and being physical all week. We’ve got it going in the right direction."

W-M improves to 5-1 in conference and will host Elgin Friday.
