WALLA WALLA - Little League all-star teams from Walla Walla, Waitsburg, Dayton and Prescott are headed to Clarkston this week for three age levels of District 5 baseball competition, all of them battling for a single ticket to their respective Washington state tournaments later in the month.
All three of the District 5 tournaments - 11-12 age division, 10-11 and 9-10 - begin play on Monday. The 10-11 tourney, which features just two teams, could wrap up as early as Tuesday if one of the two teams sweeps the first two games, or on Thursday if there is a split. The 11-12 and 9-10 tournaments, each with four-team fields, conclude Thursday, or Friday if necessary.
All three tournaments are double-elimination affairs.
The champion of the 11-12 tournament advances to state play that begins July 25 at the Grays Harbor Little League complex in Elma. The 10-11 winner qualifies for state play in Richland beginning July 17, and the 9-10 champ moves on to state play hosted by Richmond Little League in Shoreline, also slated to begin July 17.
Walla Walla Pacific Little League and host Asotin County have entered teams in all three district tournaments. Walla Walla Valley Little League and Touchet Valley, which represents the communities of Waitsburg, Dayton and Prescott, have entered teams in the 11-12 and 9-10 tournaments but elected not to field teams in the 10-11 event.
Monday's schedule begins with a pair of 9-10 games at 3 p.m., followed by two 11-12 battles at 5 p.m. and one 10-11 tilt at 7 p.m.
Monday's 11-12 matchups send Walla Walla Valley against Asotin County and Walla Walla Pacific against Touchet Valley. Likewise, the 9-10 games pit Walla Walla Valley against Asotin County and Walla Walla Pacific against Touchet Valley. Obviously, it will be Walla Walla Pacific vs. Asotin County in Monday's 10-11 first-round game.
Five more games are on tap Tuesday - 11-12 and 9-10 loser-out games at 3 p.m., 9-10 and 11-12 winners bracket games at 5 p.m., and the second 10-11 matchup at 7 p.m. Two more loser-out games are on tap Wednesday, both beginning at 5 p.m. The third 10-11 game, if needed, begins Thursday at 3 p.m., followed by 11-12 and 9-10 games at 5 p.m. that could decide those championships. If either tournament is extended, it will conclude Friday at 5 p.m.
