Chiles recalled over salmonella concerns

A food product sold in Oregon, Idaho and some other states is being recalled due to potential salmonella contamination.

The U.S. Food and Drug Adminstration announced that Miravalle Foods of California is recalling more than 37,000 pounds of Miravalle Chile California and Miravalle Chile Nuevo Mexico peppers, distributed between March 15 and May 6, because of the possible contamination.

Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.

The recalled peppers were distributed to a small group of customers through direct delivery and to distributors and retail stores. In question are those in three-ounce clear plastic containers and in 25-pound bulk packaging.

No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this problem.

The potential for contamination was noted after lab analysis of a random sample of the affected product conducted by the FDA.

Production of the product has been suspended while the FDA and the company continue their investigation as to the source of the problem.

Consumers who have purchased any of the affected peppers are urged to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. People with questions may contact the company at 626-575-755.
