Business Monthly Bio - Steve Adler

Workplace/business: Steve Adler, owns Adler's Coins inside Pak N Ship, 123 E. Main St.

Hometown: He was born in Los Angeles. He came here from L.A. for a slower pace and to get away from the congestion. "It's a better lifestyle for my daughter."

Favorite Memory: "I was fortunate to grow up in a middle class Jewish family. Every year we would go to Mammoth Lakes and get the same cabin. The family, including an aunt and uncle, would go trout fishing every summer. Family time."

Favorite music: "The '60s rock 'n' roll. Janis Joplin, Bob Dylan, anything from the '60s and '70s. The Temptations, Four Tops, Jimi Hendrix. That music is still good today."

Favorite movies: "Unfortunately movies today are more computerized and less acting. 'The Graduate,' 'Easy Rider,' 'Apocalypse Now,' 'On The Waterfront.'" He also likes mysteries, including the black-and-white Sherlock Holmes series from the 1930s. "And of course, John Wayne."

Favorite food: Caesar Salad. He also likes Greek and Italian food.

Favorite book: "I go between fiction and nonfiction. I love mysteries, and then I get into biographies."

Favorite hobby: "Like coin collecting? Buying and selling gold and silver coins. I used to skeet and trap shoot at the Walla Walla Gun Club before my job at the penitentiary. I got my wife a 20 gauge Browning for Valentine's Day. She said that was not appropriate for Valentine's Day, so I ended up with it." He also said, "I don't see the young kids today coming in collecting coins. They're not involved in a hobby like my generation. They need to be collecting something -- coins, butterflies, marbles, dolls -- or reading."

Favorite place in Walla Walla County: "My backyard. I like to sit out on the veranda with my family and watch the sun go down. We enjoy sitting out there and the view of the Blue Mountains."

Most recent local purchase: 1922 Saint Gaudens $20 gold coin.

Dream vacation: "I've been to Europe already. I would like to travel the world with my family -- a great education for my daughter."

Worst job: "I had to get up at 1 a.m. to be at the downtown L.A. produce market at 2 a.m. I don't like staying up all night when others are sleeping. Working nights messes up your body."

Another career: "If I'd been smart enough, I would have been a doctor, a surgeon. Giving people their sight back."

Person you'd most like to talk to: "My grandfather. He died when I was five years old. I never had a chance to actually know him."
