Missionary men pick up two more tennis victories

Whitman's split squad posts an 8-1 win over Willamette before a 9-0 shellacking of Lewis & Clark Sunday.

PORTLAND -Two seniors, two sophomores and two freshmen combined forces here Sunday afternoon to vault Whitman College past Lewis & Clark 9-0 in Northwest Conference men's tennis action.

Earlier in the day, a second group of Whitman players posted an 8-1 victory over Willamette in Salem, Ore.

The most competitive singles match in the victory over L&C came at No. 1, where freshman Sam Sadeghi scrambled past Lewis & Clark senior Peter Ray 6-4, 2-6, 10-8.

Sophomore Conor Holton-Burke had less trouble at No. 2, winning 6-1, 6-1.

Senior Thomas Roston and sophomore Adriel Borshansky pitched 6-0, 6-0 shutouts at No. 3 and No. 4 singles, respectively.

Freshman Matt Tesmond won 6-2, 6-0 at No. 5, and senior David Deming notched an 8-1 victory in an abbreviated match at No. 6.

Whitman's victory over Willamette Sunday was its second at the Bearcats' expense this season. The loss dropped Willamette to 7-5 overall and 7-3 in the NWC.

After a sweep in doubles, senior Matt Solomon ratcheted up his game at No. 1 singles, leaving no doubt with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Michael Baumgartner. Solomon dropped a three-set decision to Baumgartner in the earlier meeting between the two schools.

Senior Jasper Follows was next off the courts, scoring the clinching fifth team point with a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 5.

Junior Chris Bailey at No. 3 and senior Jake Cappel at No. 6 were the next Whitman players to polish off victories. Bailey won 6-2, 7-5 while Cappel sidestepped a third set 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) triumph.

Playing at No. 2 singles, freshman Jeffrey Tolman battled past Joshua Wong 6-3, 5-7, 10-7.

In the last match to finish, senior Christoph Fuchs split his first two sets at No. 4 but then fell 10-7 decision in the third-set super-tiebreaker.
