Irish sweep doubleheader against Asotin, 26-1 and 12-1


ASOTIN - DeSales racked up 29 hits and used strong pitching to sweep a season-opening District 9 prep softball doubleheader from Asotin here on Tuesday.

The Irish garnered 19 hits and Amanda Warnick hurled a complete game in the 26-1 victory in the opener.

DeSales collected 10 hits and Ashlyn Lyons fired a one-hitter in the 12-1 victory in the nightcap.

Warnick fanned seven batters and walked two in her five-inning stint in the first game. She allowed three hits.

Lyons and Alex Buley led the Irish hit parade with three hits each in the opener.

Lexi Zander, Amy Arnzen, Janelle Hartford, Ali

Zander, Warnick and Michelle Prior made two hits each.

Lyons fanned seven and walked three in the six-inning second game. She held the Panthers to one hit by Jamie Henry.

Lyons also had three hits in the second game. Arnzen, Hartford and Buley had two hits each.

"The girls played real well," Irish coach Russ Vera said. "We still have a lot of things to work on, but I was impressed with the way we hit the ball and with our aggression on the base paths.

"And I was impressed with the way Asotin never gave up," he continued. "They played hard through both games despite the scores.

"We still have some things to work on, and hopefully we will continue to hit the ball well," Vera said

DeSales returns to action on Thursday with as 3 p.m. doubleheader against Garfield-Palouse at the Irish field.
