Jim and Jeanne Beirne of Walla Walla celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary with a trip to Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, and plan a family gathering in Durango, Colo. in September.
The couple met when, as director of a freshman class melodrama skit, Jeanne walked up to classmate Jim and asked him, "Would you be my hero?" and he has been ever since. The couple married May 9, 1970, in Lake Charles, La. Jeanne's maiden name is DeBois.
A physician, Jim had a 25-year career at the Walla Walla Clinic in internal medicine, endocrinology and nuclear medicine. He served on the medical staff at St. Mary Medical Center Hospital and Walla Walla General Hospital and participated in many diabetic education programs in Walla Walla, southeast Washington and northeastern Oregon. He retired in October, 2003.
He serves on the C.Q.I. committee at the Walla Walla Clinic and on the Assumption Parish Council. His hobbies include fly fishing, fly tying, cross country skiing, camping and music. He has performed with local bands "Back to the 50's," "Torch and Beirne," and "Goin' Brogue" and is a member of the guitar choir at Assumption Church.
Jeanne taught French and English in Texas and Utah before arriving in Walla Walla. She served as a substitute teacher at DeSales Catholic High School and taught pre-school French through the YWCA. She served as program director at Camp Fire USA for 10 years and taught for the early childhood education program at Walla Walla Community College. She retired in May, 2001. Jeanne served on the board of education for Walla Walla Public Schools from 1993-2001. Prior to that, she was president of Berney Elementary PTA and Walla Walla County PTSA. She was president of the Walla Walla branch of the American Association of University Women and coordinator of Great Explorations in Math, Science and Technology. In retirement, she continues her affiliation with AAUW and has joined Assumption Church Women and Wa-Hi Drama Mamas. She enjoys Jazzercise, camping, cross country skiing, reading, and crafts.
The couple have two daughters and sons-in-law: Amy and Dan Verbeten of Driggs, Idaho and Dr. Sandra Beirne and Dr. Will Finn, of Shiprock, N.M. They have a one-month-old grandson, Jasper Davis Finn.
