WALLA WALLA - The Whitman College women's basketball team, after opening its season with a pair of neutral-court victories last weekend, has jumped into the USA Today/ESPN NCAA Division III Top 25 Coaches Poll.
Whitman is part of a three-way tie for the No. 24 spot. The other two teams are Lewis & Clark, one of Whitman's Northwest Conference rivals, and Western Connecticut State University.
A third NWC school, George Fox, is No. 4 in the poll. The Bruins are the defending NWC champions.
Amherst College in Massachusetts tops the poll with Michigan's Hope College in the No. 2 spot. Wisconsin-Stevens point is No. 3.
Whitman picked up its victories last weekend in winning the WHIT Classic in Spokane. The Missionaries opened with a come-from-behind victory over NAIA-affiliated Northwest Univeristy from Kirkland, Wash., and then crushed UC-Santa Cruz, an NCAA Division III independent, in their second contest.
Whitman heads to the Puget Sound area this weekend for a return match with Northwest on Friday and a game against the NAIA's Evergreen State on Saturday.
