Walla Walla county, city joint agency moves ahead

The city and county are working to fill positions on a board to govern the planning agency.


WALLA WALLA -- Formation of a new city-county planning agency took another step ahead this week.

Walla Walla County commissioners Monday voted 3-0 to create the Walla Walla Joint Community Development Agency. The action finished the joint approval process started last week when the Walla Walla City Council also unanimously approved the agreement.

The new body will be an independent entity that will process building, land use and other permits for the city and county. It will also provide staff support for the city and county planning commissions, City Council and county commission.

Gregg Loney, county commission chairman, said today the next step will be formation of a three-member board of directors who will, in turn, hire an executive director and determine how the department will be staffed based on the director's recommendation.

One member of the board will be appointed by the county, one by the City Council and the third approved by both the city and county. County commissioners Monday chose Commissioner Greg Tompkins as their representative and the City Council is meeting tonight to choose its representative.

The third member will be chosen after applications are screened by a committee of city and county representatives, Loney said.

Applications from people wishing to serve as the third member are due by 4 p.m. on Friday. Information on applications is available by calling the Walla Walla city clerk at 524-4348 or county commissioners' office at 524-2505.
