Despite the GOL setback, Mac-Hi continues to show improvement over the season, coach Chuck Pease says.

BAKER CITY, Ore. - A Baker team among the tops in the Oregon Class 4A ranks handed Greater Oregon League rival Mac-Hi a 47-10 defeat here Friday.

The second quarter, a 21-point affair for the Bulldogs, again was troublesome for the Pioneers.

"We came out pretty good in the first quarter with ball possession," Mac-Hi coach Chuck Pease said. "We got into the red zone, and then had an interception. After that, it was like last week (when the Pioneers gave up 21 second-quarter points to Medical Lake). The points added up real fast. We didn't fall apart, but our consistency dropped off.

"Baker is fundamentally sound," he said. "We were overwhelmed, and it took them a while to get their composure."

The big second quarter helped Baker to a 35-0 halftime lead, and despite a spirited Mac-Hi second half and 10 fourth-quarter points the Pioneers weren't able to muster a rally.

"That deficit in the second quarter just killed us," Pease said. "We worked on it last week, and we'll be working on it again this week - our mental focus in the second quarter."

Josh Rutherford was a bright spot for the Pioneers, rushing for 152 yards on 30 carries.

"I know he's close to 150 yards rushing per game," Pease said.

And as a team, the coach is happy with its improvement this season.

"(Baker) is a very experienced team," Pease said. "I was pleased with how the kids responded to the loss. The season's not over. We just have to make some huge progress each week in practice.

"The difference between how we played Baker and how we played Tillamook to open the season is night and day," he said. "They don't give up. There's a lot of pride-factor."

Pease also said he appreciated the Mac-Hi fans' support at Baker, and noted that the Pioneers are hosting a Tailgate Party at 6 p.m. Thursday near the Mac-Hi cafeteria to show their appreciation. Hot dogs, hamburgers and drinks will be provided; people may bring salads and desserts.

On Friday, Mac-Hi (0-1 in GOL play, 3-4 overall) hosts La Grande at 7 p.m.
