WWCC women claim eighth straight East soccer title

YAKIMA - Top-ranked and defending NWAACC champion Walla Walla Community College clinched its eighth consecutive East Region women's soccer title with a 4-1 victory over Yakima Valley Saturday afternoon.

The Warriors, now 11-0-2 in league and 15-0-2 overall, got a pair of goals from Margo Hickman and broke away from an early 1-1 tie in their latest triumph.

Hickman used a Kaylie Winston assist to tally her first goal - a boot that gave WWCC a 1-0 lead in the seventh minute.

YVC's Adrianna Jones equalized at the 12-minute mark before Walla Walla assumed command. Hickman scored her NWAACC-leading 19th goal in the 29th minute, assisted by Justine Jones, to give the Warriors a 2-1 edge.

Marianne Johnson doubled WWCC's advantage with a goal in the 41st minute and Winston added another net tickler, her 16th of the season, at the 58-minute mark.

Becky Ryerse assisted on Walla Walla's latter two goals.

"We came out and played really well," said WWCC coach Chad Bodnar. "We kind of had a mess up in the back (on YVC's goal), but we took control after that.

"Margo was great, Kaylie was great, and Marianne Johnson played really well," Bodnar said. "After we got the second goal, we were in control the whole time.

"It's been great," Bodnar said of the 2010 campaign. "The East has gone from one or two good teams to three or four. We've continued to grow. We've had to. Our sophomores haven't lost to a junior college team in two years."

The Warriors travel to Spokane for a league counter on Wednesday.
