Woman arrested in stabbing Sunday morning

Vanessa M. Drake allegedly attacked a man picking up belongings at a Newtown Road residence.

WALLA WALLA -- A woman was being held today in connection with a stabbing incident reported early Sunday.

According to court records, the incident occurred shortly after 2 a.m. in the 200 block of Newtown Road.

The victim, Reuben Wentz, told Walla Walla County Sheriff's Office deputies he was loading items into a car when the suspect, identified as Vanessa M. Drake, 29, came up behind him.

A witness told deputies she saw Drake make a stabbing motion at Wentz' back. Wentz said he realized shortly afterwards he had been stabbed and was taken to Providence St. Mary Medical Center for treatment.

Wentz told officers Drake had called him to come and pick up some pictures at the residence. While he was there, Wentz said he thought he saw eviction papers and decided he would take some items belonging to him from the residence. The alleged assault occurred as he was putting the items into his vehicle.

After further investigation and an interview with deputies, Drake was arrested for investigation of first-degree assault. She had a first appearance in Walla Walla Superior Court today and was ordered held with bond set at $100,000.

Drake had been sentenced April 4 after pleading guilty to one count each of third-degree assault and second-degree theft in connection with an assault and theft at a local department store.

At the recommendation of the prosecutor and defense attorneys, she was sentenced to 30 days with the Department of Corrections work crew in addition to 12 months of community custody. She was also ordered to pay fines, fees and court costs.
