Albert and Alice Pontarolo

Albert and Alice Pontarolo of Walla Walla celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary here on Aug. 11.

They married Aug. 11, 1946, at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Walla Walla. Alice's maiden name is Fazzari.

Albert served in the U.S. Navy until his honorable discharge in 1945. He was employed by Northern Pacific Railroad and retired as an engineer in 1987 from Burlington Northern Railroad.

In retirement he enjoyed fishing, hunting, working on his automobiles and volunteering at St. Vincent de Paul. A stroke in 2004 has limited his adventures. He is an avid reader and history buff. He tinkers around the house fixing things and enjoys the History Channel.

A homemaker, Alice raised five children and cooked for a time at the St. Patrick's Church School cafeteria. She also worked at the Pastime Cafe for her brother, until Albert's retirement. She enjoys making Christmas tree ornaments, crocheting afghans for her daughters and daughters-in-law, golfing, bowling and volunteering at Providence St. Mary Medical Center.

She maintains her vegetable and flower gardens and makes big Italian dinners, lemon meringue pies and chocolate cookies.

The Pontarolos have two sons, Michael Pontarolo of Spokane and Steve Pontarolo of Quincy, Wash; three daughters, Mary Pontarolo of Olympia, Julie Moramarco of Aberdeen, Wash., and Sandy Skurski of College Place; nine grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
