Walla Walla Valley Farmers' Market to add third day on Main Street

The Walla Walla Valley Farmers' Market is spreading its bounty.

For the next four weeks the market will expand with a third day of operations, said Beth-Aimee McGuire, the organization's executive director.

Starting this week, the market will run 3-6 p.m. Thursdays at Crawford Park, its location at Fourth Avenue and Main Street behind City Hall.

The market rife with dozens of growers and artisan vendors operates there Saturdays and Sundays at 9 a.m.-1 p.m. The season runs May 1-Oct. 30.

New technology at Valley Vision Clinic is designed to help eye-care specialists spot signs of retinal disease.

The downtown Walla Walla eye clinic, 22 W. Main St., is now offering the optomap Retinal Evaluation from Optos Inc.

The scanning laser ophthalmoscope offers a new standard of care for the local business by capturing images of virtually the entire retina. The 200-degree internal scan is captured in a quarter of a second as part of an initial step in a comprehensive eye exam. The results can help eye-care practitioners discover early signs of retinal disease and disorders, including glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular degeneration. It can also show serious eye conditions, such as retinal detachment and non-eye or systemic diseases, including diabetes, hypertension and certain cancer.

"Most patients feel they should only be examined when they need a change in prescription," Dr. Luther Ness, a member of the physicians group that owns Valley Vision, said in the announcement. "In reality, the most important part of the examination is determining the health of the retina."

He said the optomap provides an image that can be magnified and arranged for the most comprehensive view of the back of the eye in order to more effectively discover abnormalities and plot a course of action. For more information call 529-2020.
