Kids get day in sun at market


The Walla Walla Valley Farmers' Market will offer kids a farm-filled adventure Saturday.

The seventh annual "Kids Day at the Market" will be a destination for fun with a crush of activities and special "passports" that children can have stamped along the way to track their journeys.

Businesses and organizations will provide information and free children's activities at their booths. A few items on the agenda: zucchini car races, face-painting, a petting zoo and health information from Walla Walla General Hospital.

Valley Transit will host "Trolley Story Time" with volunteers from the Walla Walla Public Library.

The city and Walla Walla Fire District 4 will have heavy equipment and fire trucks while Tumac Machinery and the Walla Walla Farmers Co-op supply tractors. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Walla Walla Children's Museum will each be on hand.

Also, the Walla Walla Police Department's Child Abduction Response Team will have a SafeAssured ID event. Participating families pay $6 for an at-cost packet that includes a full-color data card and a parent's guidebook with prevention tips, written in conjunction with the National Center of Missing & Exploited Children.

A privacy-protected mini-CD is a go-to place to include 10 electronically imaged fingerprints, a digital photograph, video showing mannerisms and gait with a linked audio file providing the child's voice and inflection and accent. General information is also included.

Kids Day at the Market runs 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at the market location at Fourth Avenue and Main Street behind City Hall.

Walla Walla's grocery cooperative is taking reservations for its seasonal Made in Walla Walla boxes.

Fall 2011 reservations are being accepted for the Daily Market Cooperative's community-supported agriculture boxes that feature a weekly array of food items all grown, raised or made locally.

The 13-week season runs Sept. 14-Dec. 14, excluding Thanksgiving week. Though the co-op is currently without an official home, the Walla Walla Bread Company, 225 E. Main St., will be the pickup location for Made in Walla Walla boxes.

Boxes are available for pickup every Wednesday. To participate in the entire season, register by Sept. 2.

The cost for the season for a standard share is $390, which breaks down to $30 per week.

Participants choose six options from a selection that includes one dozen eggs, one gallon of skim, 2 percent or whole milk or a half-gallon of raw milk; one loaf of local artisan bread; one-half pound of salad greens; grain; seasonal vegetables; and seasonal fruit.

Half of a standard share is $234, which equals $18 per week, and includes three options. A meat addition is available for an additional $143 and includes a variety of pork, lamb, beef and chicken cuts.

The voting has begun to put mobile food truck Andrae's Kitchen on the national map.

The Walla Walla business, owned by chef Andrae Bopp, is in the running for a chance to appear on the third season of "The Great Food Truck Race" hosted by chef Tyler Florence on Food Network. The truck with the most votes will also win $10,000.

Since voting began Aug. 14, Andrae's Kitchen has fluctuated in the rankings. Having broken the Top 10 at one point it sat in 19th early this morning. Bopp said he's been amazed by the support, especially considering the relatively small population of this voting community versus some of the other metropolitan communities voting for their local food trucks.

Those wanting to cast a vote can visit or text FT006 to 66789 up to 10 times a day.

"The Great Food Truck Race" follows the journey of eight gourmet food trucks on a coast-to-coast foodie road trip with the goal of convincing Americans to "step outside their culinary comfort zones and try something new," according to an online description.

Chefs steering the rigs compete in weekly challenges to see who can sell the most. The losing team each week drives home. The winner receives $100,000.
