DAYTON - Applications are now open for a 16-week Citizens Academy offered by the Columbia County Sheriff's Office.
Only 15 spaces remain available for the Academy. Call 382-0911 to request an application form.
Applicants must be at least 18 years old and pass a criminal background check before being accepted. Deadline for applications is Feb. 1, 2012.
Classes will meet on Wednesdays from 6 to 8 p.m. beginning in February.
Topics to be covered include the 9-1-1 public education program, patrol procedures, criminal law, court procedures, use of force and deadly force, criminal investigations, traffic accident investigations, narcotics and alcohol enforcement, sex offender information, communications, National Night Out, Emergency Management, domestic violence, the reserve deputy program and Search and Rescue.
Students will also have the opportunity to ride with a deputy for a portion of his shift and tour the communications center and jail.
This is the fifth time the academy has been offered, and since 2008 100 students have participated in the program.
