KENNEWICK - Wa-Hi's pressure defense propelled the Blue Devil girls to a 39-11 halftime lead here at Southridge Saturday night.

Wa-Hi finished the job and posted a non-conference 56-28 girls basketball win over the Suns.

The Blue Devil full court press got Wa-Hi off on the right foot as it jumped to a 22-9 lead after one. Wa-Hi turned it up one more notch as the Devils limited the Suns to only two second-quarter points to take a 39-11 lead at intermission.

"Our press stifled them," Wa-Hi coach Jill Meliah said. "We got steals (12 for the game) that led to easy buckets."

Wa-Hi hit just enough long-range shots - 3-pointers from Maddie Jacobson, Andrea Hamada, and Jaiden Hodnefield - to pull the Sun defense out, and 6-foot-2 Blue Devil post Torri Crawford went to work inside.

Crawford hit 9-of-15 from the floor and converted three free throws to finish with a game high 21 points.

"We started hitting our outside shots and that freed Torri up," Meliah said. "She had a good night, ran the floor well and finished strong in the paint."

The Blue Devils held serve in the second half as the Suns stayed even at 17-17 for the half, but the first-half Blue Devil surge was too much to overcome.

"We worked on being aggressive in our half-court man and looked to push the ball," Meliah said of the Wa-Hi second half. "(Freshman) MiKayla (Ferenz) is good at seeing the floor."

Wa-Hi posted 17 assists on the night and MiKayla Ferenz had eight to lead the Blue Devils.

Wa-Hi dominated the Suns on the glass as the Devils out rebounded the Suns 54-31. Freshman Maddy Sirmon led the way with a game-high 10 rebounds.

Emma Sanders led the Suns with 11 points, but Wa-Hi limited Southridge to 11 of 49 (22 percent) shooting from the field.

Jacobson finished with eight points, and Hamada and Ferenz both added five as Wa-Hi improved to 3-2 on the season.

Wa-Hi travels to Pendleton Tuesday, before opening league play Friday when Richland visits.
