Pirates pillage Bulldog girls

Pomeroy sprints to an early lead and never relents in a 58-27 thumping of Dayton Tuesday night.

DAYTON - The Pomeroy Pirate girls basketball team came to win Tuesday night against the Dayton Bulldogs, and that is exactly what they did.

Taking a 13-2 lead in the first quarter, the Pirates played hard until the very end to beat the Bulldogs, 58-27.

HayLee Koller led the Pirate girls to their win with 15 points.

Koller also was 6-of-8 from the line, and tied her sister, Torrie Koller, with 75 percent on 2-point field goals. The Koller sisters also each had a 3-pointer.

Torrie Koller nabbed seven rebounds and had four steals, while HayLee Koller also stole the ball four times and dished seven assists. She also gave the crowd something to cheer about when she blocked one of the Bulldog's shots.

"We played good as a team," HayLee said, while Torrie commented, "we need to work on our fundamentals and focus on the details."

The game had more sisterly competition between MacKenzie and Delaney Monahan. Delaney Monahan scored nine points and rebounded six times, while MacKenzie Monahan scored 10 points and had two assists and two steals.

"It was kind of an ugly game for us," said Pomeroy coach Nettie Severs. "There was not a lot of attention to detail. We need to keep improving and working on more intensity.

"I am most proud of how the girls did when I gave them free reign on how they wanted to run their defense," she said. "They worked well together."

Dayton's Samura Miller had nine points and five rebounds.

Contributing seven points and five rebounds was Dayton's Nicole Lambert, who also had an assist. McKayla Bickelhaupt grabbed eleven rebounds and had one steal.

"We came out with another slow start," said Dayton coach Clayton Strong. "They took advantage of our start, as good teams do. By the time we got regrouped we were already in the hole.

"They all did well," he said. "They stayed cohesive as a unit and still cheered each other on from the bench. They didn't get discouraged, and made even more of an effort the second half," said Strong.
