Elsie J. Houchin, of Milton Freewater, peacefully passed away on Feb. 10, 2011. In October of this year, Elsie celebrated her 95th birthday with family and friends at the Odd Fellows Home in Walla Walla. Viewing and visitation will be held at Herring Funeral Home, on Monday, Feb. 14, 2011 from 2-5 p.m., A graveside service for Elsie will be held Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2011, at 1 p.m. at Mountain View Cemetery. A reception will follow at the Trinity Baptist Church, 595 Abbott Road, Walla Walla.
Elsie was born Oct. 30, 1915, to George S. and Bessie Claypool Austin. Elsie was one of five children including her brothers George, Jim and Ben and her sister Francis. She attended schools and was employed in Nebraska before coming to the Northwest. During World War II Elsie was a telegraph operator, working at the local railroad station. In 1948, Elsie joined her family in Walla Walla. Elsie was employed for 25 years as the bookkeeper at the original J.C. Penney's
Store on Main Street in Walla Walla.
In 1971, Elsie met Harry William "Bud" Houchin in the elevator of the Washington apartments. After a brief courtship, they were married that same year. Elsie and Bud enjoyed living on the family farm in
Milton Freewater and traveling to Arizona and other Southwestern states. Elsie continued to live in the home she and Bud shared until August of this year. Bud preceded Elsie in death on May 9, 1984.
Elsie will always be remembered for her big smile, warm hugs, enjoyment of a good joke and the wonderful love she had for her pets, especially her beloved dog Muffy. She enjoyed spending time with her large family, the Monday Lunch Bunch, and the Merry Widows from the Trinity Baptist Church.
Elsie is survived by Julie and Ken Cox, Laurie K. Austin, Renea and Mike Christensen, Clydene and Bill Houchin, Judy and David Houchin; four grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, great nieces and nephews and dear friends. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of choice thru the Herring Groseclose Funeral Home.
