Fans vote Walla Walla Sweets pitcher Watson into All-Star Game

WALLA WALLA - After three weeks of voting, Walla Walla Sweets fans selected left-handed pitcher Brett Watson to represent the team at the upcoming West Coast League All-Star Game hosted by the Corvallis Knights at Goss Stadium in Corvallis at 7:15 p.m. next Tuesday.

The game features one fan favorite from each WCL team.

The fan selection gives Watson an opportunity to be seen by the MLB Scouting Bureau as well as other MLB scouts from the region.

"I feel great about the vote," said Watson. "Fans got to choose a player and I am thrilled that they selected me."

"Brett represents the fan vote, but he is certainly worthy of the recognition based on performance," said Sweets general manager Zachary Fraser.

Watson has a 2-2 record on the season, and is one of three Sweets pitchers ranked in the top 10 of the WCL in ERA, allowing only 1.80 runs per nine innings pitched.

Watson most likely will be travelling with more Sweets players to Corvallis next week. Other Sweets players are expected to be elected to play in the game by the league's coaches or by the MLB Scouting Bureau.

The full All-Star roster will be issued in an announcement by league president Ken Wilson on July 18.

The All-Star game encompasses a variety of different activities and standards than a fan would find at a typical WCL game.

First, each team will have one designated player to represent them in a wood bat home run derby, which will occur post-batting practice.

Second, if the game is to be tied at the end of nine innings then each team will nominate one slugger to compete in a five out home run competition instead of playing extra innings.

Finally, the MLB Scouting Bureau will vote on a game MVP, which will be recognized immediately following the game.
