MILTON-FREEWATER -- Freewater Elementary School students raised close to $1,200 for the American Heart Association in January, while also staying physically active.
Students jumped rope over three weeks as part of their physical education classes, said teacher Cathy Hendricks.
The first week, students focused on jumping rope individually using short ropes. The second week they jumped with partners, again using short ropes. By the third week, students were practicing "Double Dutch" jumping as groups with long ropes, and doing other group jumps.
About 70 students raised money from the community to benefit the American Heart Association, bringing in $1,175.24.
Top fundraisers in each participating grade were Jordan Sumpter, second grade, with $86; Carson Chester, third grade, with $212; Jennifer Garcia, a fourth-grader, who raised $54; and fifth-grader Noah Pratton, with $73. Chester was the top fundraiser for the school.
