CLAREMONT, Calif. - Playing its second match of the day, the Whitman College men's tennis team scored a 6-3 victory over Swarthmore College Friday afternoon at the Stag-Hen Invitational at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in Claremont, Calif.

Whitman, ranked No. 19 nationally, dropped an 8-1 decision earlier in the day to Pennsylvania's Kenyon College, which holds a No. 7 national ranking.

Whitman, now 8-3 on the season, played its invitational finale at 10 a.m. Saturday against No. 9 Trinity University of Texas.

In its first two matches at the invitational, Trinity downed Vassar 7-2 and lost 5-4 to No. 20 Pomona-Pitzer.

Whitman got the early jump on Swarthmore with victories in two of three matches in doubles.

Junior Conor Holton-Burke and freshman Andrew La Cava cruised to an 8-2 victory at No. 1 doubles, beating Stephen Youngblood and Zak Kelm.

At No. 2 doubles, senior Etienne Moshevich and sophomore Jeff Tolman squeezed past Max Kaye and Max Bressman by a 9-8 margin.

The Garnet got the team point at No. 3 doubles, where Christian Carcione and Seth Udelson edged Whitman senior Quin Miller and sophomore teammate Matt Tesmond by an 8-6 count.

Holton-Burke and La Cava posted quick wins at the top of the singles ladder.

Holton-Burke bested Youngblood 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1 singles while La Cava was a 6-3, 6-2 winner over Kelm at No. 2.

Moshevich outlasted Bressman 6-2, 1-6, 7-6 at No. 3 singles.

Whitman's other win in singles came at No. 6, where junior Adriel Borshansky knocked off Daniel Park 6-3, 6-3.

Tolman dropped a 6-2, 6-2 decision to Kay at No. 4 singles, and senior Chris Bailey lost 6-1, 6-0 to Anthony Collard at No. 5.

In the 8-1 loss to Kenyon College Friday morning, Whitman notched its lone team point at No. 4 singles, where Tolman rallied for a 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 victory over Kevin Ye.

Two other matches in singles were decided in three sets, although it was the Lords winning both of those battles.

Moshevich lost 6-1, 6-7, 10-6 at No. 3 singles, falling to C.J. Williams.

At No. 6 singles, Borshansky lost 7-6, 2-6, 10-7 to Austin Griffin.

The top two singles matches were also nip and tuck.

Holton-Burke lost 6-4, 7-6 to Jeremy Polster at No. 1, while La Cava was on the wrong end of a 6-3, 7-6 score at No. 2, losing to Paul Burgin.

The Lords also won at No. 5 singles, where Jake Matthews got the best of Whitman's Bailey 6-1, 6-0.

"Kenyon is a obviously a very good team," Whitman coach Jeff Northam said. "They had been here a few days and were ready to go. We didn't get off to a good start in doubles, but we played better in singles.

"It's not often that we get the chance to play Top 10 teams on a neutral court. This was good experience for our guys."

Whitman dropped all three opening matches in doubles by 8-4 scores. Missionary duos went up a break at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles, taking early 3-1 leads, but their Kenyon counterparts bounced back to take charge.

At No. 2 doubles, Moshevich and Tolman lost to Griffin and Burgin. Miller and Tesmond took the loss at No. 3, coming up short against Matthews and Ye.

Polster and Williams got the win for Kenyon at No. 1 doubles, beating Holton-Burke and La Cava.

Whitman plays three more matches next week against Texas-Tyler, Bowdoin and Cal Lutheran.
