Short-handed Pioneers split in softball games

Mac-Hi wins the opener but can't handle to offensive battle in a nightcap loss to Molalla.

MOLALLA, Ore. - Mac-Hi traveled, missing several key parts due to injury and other commitments, and managed to split a non-league softball doubleheader here Saturday.

Shawney Garcia pitched a complete game five-hitter and struck out 10 in leading the Pioneers over Molalla, 10-2, in the opener.

The Indians scored eight runs in the second of the nightcap and Mac-Hi never caught up as Molalla earned a split with a 16-10 win.

"We were missing some key players," Pioneers coach Nicole Christian said. "We came out flat after Shawney pitched a great game in the opener.

"We had some errors and they pieced together a couple of key hits," Christian said of the eight-run Molalla second. "We came back and scored some runs, but just couldn't get over the hump."

Mac-Hi grabbed a 2-0 lead with a two-run second in the opener and put the first game out of reach with a six-run third.

Garcia was only touched for two runs in the third as she finished with a five-hitter and only walked two.

"In the first game, we came out and did a good job," Christian said. "Shawney pitched well for her first time out."

Karli Cortez, Alyssa Harrington, Kariss Carrillo, and Kateland Woodhall each chipped in two hits to back Garcia's pitching and produce the 10-2 win.

Brittney Hall blasted a triple and drove in three runs, and Harrington collected three hits, but it wasn't enough as Molalla rapped out 15 hits in earning a split with the 16-10 win.

The Pioneers head to spring break at 1-1 and will host Willimina at 10 a.m. Wednesday in a non-league double dip.
