Dayton takes softball sweep of Asotin, preps for district

DAYTON - Dayton finished up the Southeast 2B softball season with a sweep of Asotin here Wednesday.

The victories leave the Bulldogs tied with Waitsburg-Prescott atop the league standings. W-P takes the higher seed to the district tournament after a preseason draw, but the two teams square off at the Trac in Pasco at 4 p.m. May 20. The teams split during the regular season.

The third through sixth seeds play games Tuesday at home sites before continuing the district tournament at the Trac Friday.

On Wednesday, Dayton scored twice in the bottom of the eighth inning to take the 3-2 victory.

"Our girls finally stepped up and got the hits we needed," Bulldogs assistant coach Desirae Jones said. "We were tied going into the eight, they scored once on a wild pitch, so we were down by one going into the bottom of the eighth."

Samantha Harting led off the bottom of the eighth with a walk, Miwa Umeda tripled to right field to score her, and Nicole Lambert knocked in the winning run.

In the nightcap, Dayton jumped out to a 7-0 lead before the Panthers scored six runs in the third.

"Asotin made a pretty good run at us in the third with six runs, but we were able to hold them after that," Jones said.

Harting went the distance in the circle for Dayton, and helped her cause going 3-for-4 at the plate with solo home runs in the second and sixth innings.

Dayton is now 14-3 overall, 10-2 in league.
