Horse owners warned of contagious disease

OLYMPIA -- Horse owners who attended a recent event in Utah are being warned to isolate their animals. Walla Walla-area horses have shown symptoms and are being tested, said Dr. Andrea Adams, a mobile large-animal veterinarian based in Touchet.

A Washington state horse that attended the National Cutting Horse Association event in Ogden from April 30 to May 8 has tested positive for Equine Herpes Virus 1. The disease is highly contagious and several other cases have been found in Utah, Colorado and elsewhere, Washington state Veterinarian Leonard Eldridge said.

In a release, Eldridge said he has not yet placed restrictions on the movement of animals. But he strongly suggested horse owners who attended the Ogden event keep their animals at home for at least two weeks.
