WALLA WALLA - Whitman College senior David Michaels has been named Northwest Conference Student Athlete of the Week for men's basketball after scoring 45 points in a pair of victories last weekend.
Michaels, a 6-foot-7 forward, erupted for a career-high 31 points last Saturday as Whitman clobbered Chapman 77-64 in a battle of NCAA DIII West Region teams in Pleasant Hill, Calif.
Knocking down 13 of 17 field goal attempts, Michaels was nearly unstoppable on the inside as well as the outside. His shooting numbers included a three-of-four effort from the 3-point line.
The Whitman men's and women's teams play their Northwest Conference openers this weekend on George Ball Court in Sherwood Center.
George Fox comes to town Friday night followed by Lewis & Clark on Saturday.
The women's game start both nights at 6 p.m. with the men's games following at about 8 p.m.
