WALLA WALLA -- This fall, Seattle Opera's Young Artists will perform Jules Massenet's "Werther" in Walla Walla as well as on other dates in Washington and British Columbia.
The local performance will be 7 p.m. Nov. 16 at Walla Walla Community College, 500 Tausick Way. For information and tickets, call the box office at 509-527-4575.
Based on Goethe's iconic novel "The Sorrows of Young Werther," the beautifully affecting score tells the story of Werther, a sensitive young poet who is in love with Charlotte. Charlotte however, is duty-bound to fulfill her mother's dying wish to marry Albert. In growing desperation, Werther chooses to end this impossible love with his death.
This opera is full of tender characterization brought forth by the beauty and romance of Massenet's music. Artistic Director Peter Kazaras and Music Director Brian Garman will oversee the production.
Nine performers were selected to participate in the 2011/12 Young Artists Program, which helps cultivate the next generation of opera singers.
Now in its 14th year, the program trains promising singers and pianist-coaches for a career in opera, with a curriculum that includes public performances in Young Artists productions as well as select mainstage roles.
