ELLENSBURG - The Wa-Hi cross country team ran to a first-place finish in both the girls and boys events here at the Ellensburg Invitational Saturday afternoon in a 2.35-mile race.
In a field of 13 teams, the top three team finishers for the boys were Wa-Hi 44, Ellensburg 60 and West Valley-Yakima 88.
The top three girls teams of a field of nine were Wa-Hi 38, Ellensburg 70 and Cashmere 75.
Pulling down individual crowns for the men and women were Wa-Hi runners. J.P. Wolpert won for the boys with a time of 11:45 and Rachel Nelson for the girls with a time of 14:50.
Rounding out the top 15 for the individual boys were four more Wa-Hi runners. Sean Newcomb (12:16) finished fourth, Greggory Heller (12:48) ninth and Ty Hafen (13:06) got 14th.
The top five runners for the boys were collectively one minute and 20 seconds faster than last year's time at this event.
Finishing in the top 15 for the individual girls were three Wa-Hi runners. Hannah Hampson grabbed second (15:29), Catherine Feistner fifth (15:42) and Lea Davidson (16:10) 11th.
The top five runners for the girls were as a team 4 minutes and 30 seconds faster than last year's time at this event.
"This was our first meet of the season," Wa-Hi coach Michael Locati said, "and from top to bottom our runners have exceeded our expectations. The time that they put in this summer is already starting to show up.
"We did extremely well at this meet."
The next Wa-Hi meet is Thursday at the Columbia Basin Big Nine meet in Yakima starting at 3:30 p.m. in a three-mile race.
