WWCC volleyball squad second at own NWAACC Crossover

WALLA WALLA - Fifth-ranked Walla Walla Community College posted a 5-1 record over the weekend and finished second in an NWAACC Crossover volleyball tournament that ended Saturday at the Dietrich Dome.

The Warriors swept Edmonds in three games, went five sets to topple Umpqua and defending NWAACC champion and No. 2-ranked Blue Mountain, swept Pierce, and stopped No. 7 Bellevue in five games before losing in three games to Mt. Hood in the championship match.

WWCC placed three players on the all-tournament team - Kayla Hanus, Brittany Dominguez, and Laekynn Culpepper. Hanus set 128 assists and upped 21 digs; Dominguez had 68 kills and 27 blocks; and Culpepper shoveled 68 digs.

"Kayla had maybe the best setting hands in the gym," Walla Walla coach Tim Toon said. "She played well in all facets of the game. Brittany is a real gamer. She is playing with a broken nose, but kept pounding balls around blockers. Laekynn had a lot of quality touches in the back row and was our emotional leader."

Toon also praised Libby Kern (45 kills, 18 blocks), Desiree Nielson (39 kills, 24 blocks), Renee Baumann (38 kills, 54 digs), and Courtney Cosdon (87 assists).

"Libby displayed some dynamic hitting and blocking," Toon said. "Desiree helped us win with her good blocking and added some nice kills from both the middle and right side of the net. Renee plays guts out all the time. "Courtney runs the offense with a lot of skill as a freshman.

"Six matches in two days is tough, but we were able to accomplish a lot as a team," Toon said. "All 14 players contributed to the wins. We solidified our position as a top-five team in the NWAACC.

"In the mid-2000s, we NEVER lost at home," Toon said. "I was pleased at how well we defended our home court against some really good teams."

The Warriors resume NWAACC Eastern Region play at Columbia Basin on Wednesday.
