Tires to spare? Collections set in county

Three events will be held in October for residents to drop off old tires for free.

WALLA WALLA -- People who want to retire their old tires will get their chance in October.

Three free tire collection events will be held in the coming month for city and county residents. The first collection will be Saturday in Walla Walla, the second on Oct. 8 in Burbank and the third on Oct. 22 in Waitsburg.

Participants will be asked to provide proof of residency by showing a valid driver's license or property tax statement with a Walla Walla County address. Residents will be able to dispose of up to 10 regular-sized car, light truck or motorcycle tires per household.

No tractor, large truck, tires over 36 inches, or tires on rims or axles will be accepted.

No tires will be accepted from businesses or other non-residential sources. Participants should also make sure their load is secured before getting out on public roadways to avoid possible problems caused by flying debris.

Tom Glover, Walla Walla Joint Community Agency director, said in a release the collection events are being paid for by a grant from the state Department of Ecology's Waste Tire Removal Account. The account is funded by a $1 fee charged on all new tires sold in Washington state.

The events are being coordinated by joint community development agency code compliance officers with the cooperation of the city of Walla Walla Fire Department, Walla Walla County Fire District 5, the city of Waitsburg and the Walla Walla County Health Department.

"These events will allow residents to clean up old tires on their property which can harbor pests and create a fire hazard. Folks can have a healthier environment to live in and tidy up their property by getting rid of tires before they become a nuisance issue," says Brent Baldwin, an agency code compliance officer.

People who would like to volunteer to help at an event or have questions can call Baldwin at 524-4717 or Nina Hill at 524-4726.
