UMATILLA - Mac-Hi withstood a five-run, sixth-inning rally to take an 8-7 victory over Class 3A Umatilla Tuesday night in non-league baseball play.
The Pioneers built an 8-2 lead off runs in the first, third and fourth innings, including a three-run homer by William McCoy in the fourth.
The late almost-collapse is the most recent in a string of collapses that left Mac-Hi coach Mike Garcia wanting more from his relievers.
"The last three games, defensively, our team has been playing pretty solid," Garcia said. "We've had three errors in the last three games. If we can start closing out a game with our pitchers throwing well enough to hit their spots, then we'll be alright.
"We're hitting, we've got great defense, now we just need to work on closing out our games," Garcia said.
The Pioneers (6-4) host Baker for a Greater Oregon League doubleheader Friday at 2 p.m.
