WWU softball team splits Western Washington trip

Walla Walla University's Nicole Beeks pitches every inning but one on the weekend as the Wolves face Edmonds and Skagit Valley.

LANGLEY, Wash. - The Walla Walla University softball team split a roadtrip in Western Washington this weekend; first sweeping Edmonds Community College Friday in mercy-rule fashion then falling in a pair of mercy-rulings Sunday against Skagit Valley College in Langley, Wash.

"The girls played well and it was a good weekend," WWU coach Mike Jimenez said. "We didn't take the whole squad because of injuries and for us to go out and compete, I was happy with that."

WWU pitcher Nicole Beeks pitched all but one inning in the trip. She helped limit ECC to six hits over five innings in a 22-5 thrashing in Friday's opener. Beeks had ample run support again for the nightcap when the Wolves scored nine runs over the fifth and sixth innings to overcome a 9-8 deficit and pick up a 17-9 win.

On Sunday the Wolves offense was stymied as they dropped a pair of games against SVC, 6-4 and 12-4.

"The five errors we had in the first game (Sunday) gave up four runs - three errors were in the fourth inning," Jimenez said. "You take away those errors and we have a split.

"In the second game Nicole (Beeks) just got tired," Jimenez said. "Her pitches were up in the zone and SVC just hit well."

The Wolves are now 11-9 on the season and host Blue Mountain Community College for a doubleheader Tuesday at 3 p.m.
