Prins leads All-City tourney after Vets

WALLA WALLA — Greg Prins played bogey free golf here Saturday at the Veteran’s Memorial golf course in opening round play at the 62nd annual Walla Walla All-City golf championship.

Prins scored birdies on No. 8, 11, and 15 to finish his round at 3-under 69 on the par 72 course and take a one-shot lead to Walla Walla Country Club for today’s final round.

“I hit the driver pretty well today,” Prins said. “I set myself up in some good positions to just knock it on the green and hope to make some putts. I didn’t make a lot of (putts), but I made enough. I didn’t take advantage of the par fives like I wanted to, as I only birdied one of them (No. 8). I didn’t make any bogeys and that was the key to why I played so well.”

Jeff Neher and Jorge Martinez shot the only other sub-par rounds as each finished at 2-under 70, one-shot behind Prins.

Neher overcame bogeys at No. 7, 15, and 17, birdied No. 8, 9, and 11 after his bogey at the par-3 seventh, and opened with a bird on No. 3, and got his last bird at the par-5, 484-yard No. 16 to carve out his 2-under 70.

“I hit my irons pretty well and made a couple of putts,” Neher said. “I played pretty sturdy and didn’t get myself in any big trouble. I had bad bogeys, where you hope to make par but you make bogey.”

Martinez struck for an eagle 3 on the par-5, 495-yard No. 8 to highlight his round and finished the back nine in even par with birds on 15 and 17 to off set bogeys on 14 and 15.

“I hit 15 holes in regulation,” Martinez said. “Putts weren’t going in. I made a 15-foot eagle (No. 8), and that really helped. I went back to back bogeys on 14 and 15. Hit both of them into the trees, but had a chance to par both, but they lipped out. I haven’t been playing very well, so this is surprising to me to shoot this 70.”

Barry Wofford finished with even par 72 to stay in the hunt at three back.

Prins, Neher, Martinez, and Wofford tee off at the Country Club at 10 a.m. this morning with the 62nd All-City championship on the line.

“I play out there whenever I can,” Prins said of the Country Club. “My game has been pretty consistent so I’m excited for tomorrow. I’ve played (in the All-City) for three or four years. I’ve never won, gotten second, so we’ll see what happens.”

“He (Prins) hits it so far,” Neher said. “He will hit it by me all day tomorrow (Sunday) and that’s a huge advantage.”

“This is my first (All-City tournament),” Martinez said. “Tomorrow (Sunday), will be fun to play with guys that are really good golfers.”

Joan Schille fired an 80 to lead the first flight’s women’s contingent of Schille, Dona Dunovant, Jan Harvey, and Sarah Michelson.

In second flight action, Jim Sanders fired an 81 to take a three-stroke lead over Scott Adams.

Sanders’ net score of 67 tied Martinez for low net of the field. Naomi Fulgham, Tony Billingsley, Richard Howerton, and Onie Bloomberg each posted a net score of 69 to trail Sanders by two shots in Flight 2 net play.

The first foursome teed off at the Country Club at 8 a.m. this morning to open final-round play.
