Dayton girls open with two victories

DAYTON — Dayton’s girls basketball team tipped off its season with a 60-20 romp at Elgin Friday night, and followed that up with a 46-37 victory over Kennewick’s junior varsity squad on the Bulldogs’ court Saturday.

Against the Huskies Friday night, balanced scoring led Dayton’s effort. Courtney Fuller led the way with 15 points, Jessica Tate and McKayla Bickelhaupt had nine apiece, and Samantha Harting and Malia Frame scored six points apiece.

On Saturday night, Fuller again led the way with 14 points, including hitting 10-of-14 free throws, with Bickelhaupt, Harting and Frame all putting up eight.

“In Elgin, I thought our effort was really good for our first game,” Dayton coach Clayton Strong said. “It got physical at times. We played really good defense and worked on some things late in the game when we were up. It was a chance to work on some things. We got everybody on the floor a ton, and shot free throws really well.”

The Bulldogs took an 18-2 lead after the first quarter, and held a 41-8 halftime lead.

Dayton was pushed a little harder on Saturday, as Kennewick’s JV had the Bulldogs tied up at 21-all at halftime. Dayton pulled away in the fourth quarter for the victory.

“I was worried with our late night (in Elgin) and early tip,” Strong said. “I thought we might be sluggish, but we got out to a quick start. Kennewick went to the zone and got back into it. We didn’t shoot it well. Kennewick was quick and scrappy, and that had something to do with our poor shooting.

“We hit free throws down the stretch,” he said. “I thought our effort was good, all my girls played extremely hard.”

Dayton hosts River View at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

“They were a couple good games for us to get our feet wet,” Strong said. “We know have to play better this week if we’re going to continue to have the success we’re having.”
