Riverside Christian girls down Irish, 48-39

WALLA WALLA — DeSales dug itself a 14-6 hole after one quarter here Tuesday in non-conference girls basketball action.

Brigit Lyons hit 1-of-2 free throws with 5:51 to play in the game to finally get DeSales even at 35-35, but Riverside Christian responded behind 9-of-10 free-throw shooting with a 13-4 run to come away with a 48-39 win.

“We had several stops there when it was tied,” Irish coach Tim Duncan said. “Our offense kind of went in the tank. We started throwing up stuff and acting like we were down 10. Part of that is that we had girls trying to do too much.”

The Irish hit two of their first 18 shots and trailed 14-6 after one quarter, but behind four points from Allison Wujek and two steals from Allesyn Lyons to close out the half, DeSales narrowed the gap to 27-20 at intermission.

With RCS up 27-16 following a 3-point play from DeSales’ Abby Crowley, Lyons went to work. Her first steal resulted in a Molli Lesko bucket, and Lyons finished the job on her second steal to get DeSales within seven.

“Allesyn did a really good job for us,” Duncan said. “She actually got three as we got a jump ball out of one of them.”

Wujek scored five points in the third to spark a 12-8 Irish run and cut the Crusader lead to 35-32 heading to the fourth.

Crowley scored on a feed from Teresa Acock to set the stage for Crowley’s tying free throw, but RCS had the answer as Lexi Carpenter drained four consecutive free throws, with her last two giving the Crusaders a 46-36 lead with 1:32 left.

The Irish, 2-for-23 from 3-point land, saw their shooting woes continue as they hit only one of five 3-point attempts, a trey from Brigit Lyons, over the last five minutes.

The Crusaders’ Jessica Carpenter led all scorers with 15.

Wujek finished with 11 to lead the Irish. Crowley posted a double-double with 10 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.

“It (RCS) is a good ball club,” Duncan said. “Abby (Crowley) played like we thought she would. Allison (Wujek) will get better and better. We got out worked in the first half, but we out worked them in the second half. If we work as hard in the first half as we did in the second, we’ll be OK.”

The Irish travel to Mac-Hi Monday for a non-conference battle.
