HELIX — The Helix Grizzlies cashed in their first victory of the young boys basketball season here Saturday night with a 49-27 victory over Long Creek.

Coupled with Friday’s 73-50 loss at Bickleton, the Grizzlies are now 1-3 in non-league play heading into Tuesday’s game here against Touchet. The non-leaguer is slated for a 7 p.m. opening tip.

Jason Bushman, a 5-foot-9 sophomore power forward, scored three of his four baskets in the fourth quarter as the Grizzlies outscored Long Creek 15-4 to pull away to the lopsided win. Bushman finished the night with 12 points and shared team-high scoring honors with Derek Clark.

Clark, a 5-10 junior shooting guard, nailed the game’s only two 3-point baskets, one each in the first and second quarters, as Helix fashioned a 20-10 halftime advantage.

Dusty Bennett, a 5-7 junior guard, was a third Grizzly in double figures with 11 points. Bennett got his team off to a fast start with three first-quarter baskets as Helix broke on top 10-2.

Keenan Hack scored six of his eight points in the third period for the Grizzlies and Brandon Thompson tallied all six of his points after the intermission.

Long Creek’s Isaac Studtmann led all scorers with 17 points on seven field goals and 3-of-10 shooting from the free-throw line.

“Long Creek had just one real scorer,” Helix coach Luke Hegdal said. “We tried to focus our defense on him and let the other guys shoot.”

It was an altogether different game Friday night as Bickelton raced to a 22-12 first-quarter advantage and never looked back.

The Grizzlies trailed 35-16 at halftime and 60-28 after three quarters before making inroads on Bickelton’s big lead by outscoring the home team 22-13 over the game’s final eight minutes.

Mitchell Powers drained four 3-point baskets and scored a game-high 22 points for Bickelton. Nathan Powers and Kane Lowe were also in double figures with 10 points each, and Troy Roberts narrowly missed a double-digit night with nine points.

Bushman led the Griz with 15 points and Clark was close behind with 13 points.
