WALLA WALLA — DeSales golfer and football player Ryan Baumgart inked his National Letter of Intent Wednesday to play golf for Saint Martin’s University, an NCAA Division II school near Olympia.
Baumgart, who verbally committed to the Saints immediately following a visit to the Lacey, Wash., campus in November, led the Irish to their first-ever team golf championship and won his second Class 2B individual state title this past spring.
“I really like their coach, (Saint Martin’s head coach) Kevin Bishop,” Baumgart said of why he chose to go to Saint Martins. “He was really nice; he is a good teacher. I just felt comfortable with him, and they play nice courses — really nice courses.”
Baumgart had interest from Idaho, Seattle University and Whitworth.
Although not sure yet, Baumgart said he was considering a major in either engineering or accounting.
He joins Austin Spicer of Gresham, Ore., in signing with the Saints during the early signing period.
“Both Ryan and Austin had great junior seasons,” Bishop said in a press release. “They have a love of the game, enjoy practicing and competing and should only get better throughout their college careers.”
Baumgart also helped lead the Irish to the Washington Class 2B football quarterfinals and a share of the Southeast 2B league title as a wide receiver.
He won the Wendy’s High School Heisman award for the state of Washington and was named to the all-Southeast 2B football team.
