Bulldog girls shake Lacrosse-Washtucna

DAYTON — It took a little bit for Dayton’s girls to shake off some rust from a five-day break, but the Bulldogs did and handed Lacrosse-Washtucna a 46-19 defeat at the Dayton Christmas Tournament here Thursday.

“We gave them four or five days off over the break to heal up and mentally take a break,” Bulldogs coach Clayton Strong said. “We came out and misplayed a few shots, and let Lacrosse hang around. But we did a good job of getting a lead in the first half, and in the second half we got back to hitting the backboards.”

It was an entirely different outcome for the Dayton boys team. The Bulldogs fell behind undefeated Lacrosse-Washtucna 6-2 after one quarter, 22-4 at halftime and suffered a 52-19 defeat.

Darcy Stamper scored 15 points for 8-0 L-W and Justin Wargo added 12. Dayton played without leading scorer Wyatt Frame.

Dayton’s girls led just 8-7 after the first eight minutes, but opened that margin up to 20-11 at halftime. The Bulldogs outscored L-W 26-8 in the second half.

“It was good to get back into it after the break,” he said. “I thought we responded really well to the loss (a 40-37 defeat to Pomeroy on Dec. 20). We played with better focus.”

Dayton pulled down 37 rebounds, including 16 offensive boards, which made Strong happy.

“We did a good job getting offensive boards,” he said. “Last night was the first time all year we were working to really execute our offensive stuff as a whole group. We still have some room to get better with it, but we played much better as far as being unselfish with the basketball.”

Malia Frame led Dayton with 16 points, with McKayla Bickelhaupt putting up 11 and Lexi Ward eight.

“Our legs weren’t quite there,” Strong said. “But it was a good one to get our younger girls in there. We played junior varsity players the bulk of the fourth quarter and they stepped up. It got our regulars off their feet so they’ll be fresher for tonight.”

The Bulldogs play Asotin at 7:30 p.m. tonight in the tournament finale for the girls.

Elgin and Lacrosse-Washtucna’s girls square off at 4:30 p.m.

On the boys side, Elgin plays L-W at 3 p.m. today, and Asotin and Wahkiakum face off at 6 p.m.

The Dayton boys play the lone game Saturday, at noon against Wahkiakum.
