MILTON-FREEWATER — A Saturday morning fire destroyed a vacant house northwest of town.
When firefighters arrived at 53216 Locust Road around 1 a.m., flames were already shooting well above the roof of the house, forcing crews to take defensive measures to keep the flames from spreading to two outbuildings.
“It is unclear what time the fire started. But for flames to be showing in the roof at the time of dispatch would mean that it would have to have been a while,” Milton-Freewater Rural Fire Department Lt. Rob Snell said.
It took firefighters 45 minutes to contain the fire; they cleared the scene just before 3 a.m. with nothing left of the house by a chimney stack.
No injuries or damage to other structures were reported.
No cause was determined.
